It's hard to say "no, not ever" about anything; however, I remain highly skeptical of any use of technology that keeps the populace under constant surveillance. The word "Orwellian" comes readily to mind, referencing another book that should be required reading by every high school student. For those too young, I'm referring of course, to the book "1984" by George Orwell.

Again, this is not conspiracy theory paranoia, this is the reality of policing and surveillance -- any power given will be taken to the extreme and abused; this is proven. This is why Larry says repeatedly that we must have rules that limit what the police can do and avoid allowing them very much discretion.

Thanks for the comment. Well put too. Do you think that there is NO justification for any govt using any of the technologies?

On the camera surveillance issue, if you read Edward Snowden's book "Permanent Record" he described the intelligence community's philosophy on this type thing. It is very simple: Collect everything, store it forever. I think, therefore, like Andy, we should absolutely ban these technologies from government use at every possible turn because the one thing we know about government agents in general (such as police) is that they WILL abuse any power they are given. This has been proven time and time again; we know this will happen.

If you have not read that book, you should make a point to do so, no matter where you sit on what Snowden did. Also read Glenn Greenwald's book, kind of on the same subject but from a completely different perspective: "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State."
